Around the third week of August, something starts happening in the household.
The kids feel it before they can name it. The shoulders go up. The bickering increases. The bedtime resistance gets a little more theatrical. Old patterns come back that you thought you’d grown out of. Old patterns come back in you, too, if you’re being honest with yourself.
By the first week of September, the whole house is in a slightly different key.
The conventional read on this is that it’s back-to-school stress. New schedules, new teachers, new shoes, new lunchboxes. The kids are nervous about new classrooms. The parents are managing logistics. Everyone is a little frayed because the summer rhythm is ending and the school rhythm is starting.
That’s part of it. But it isn’t the whole thing, and confusing the part for the whole is part of why September keeps being like this every year.
Don’t mistake September tension for September. Most of it isn’t about this year at all.
What’s Actually Surfacing in September
September pulls up old material. Not new material.
Every adult walking through the August-to-September transition is also walking through their own school memories. The first day. The new teacher who turned out to be hard. The friend group that shifted without explanation. The sense of being measured. The lunch hour that was lonely. The bus seat. The hallway. The Sunday night feeling, sharpened by the prospect of Monday morning at school.
Most of that didn’t get processed at the time. You were a child. You moved through it because you had to. The September feelings got stored, and they didn’t go anywhere. They got triggered every September of your childhood, then put away again, every June.
Now you’re an adult. The September stimuli show up - the smell of the air shifting, the school supply aisle, the school bus going past, the early morning darkness creeping in, and the old material surfaces, automatically. You experience it as "I’m just stressed about back-to-school." What you’re actually doing is reliving every September your nervous system has on file.
The kids in your house are doing the same thing, in real time, for the first time. Your reactions to their reactions are old. Their reactions to your reactions are new. The system compounds quickly.
September isn’t the cause. September is the trigger. The actual material has been waiting in storage since you were the age your child is now.
Why "Better Logistics" Doesn’t Reach It
The standard advice for September tension is to manage it better. Get organized earlier. Make a calendar. Buy the supplies in August. Talk to the kids about their feelings. Plan family time. Establish the routines before they’re needed.
All of that helps. Some of it helps a lot. None of it touches the part that’s actually surfacing.
The conscious mind - the part doing the logistics, the calendar, the prep talks - accounts for about 5% of your total mental activity. The other 95% is the subconscious, and it’s the part producing the actual September response.
For people who experience September tension as a recurring family-wide event, that 95% is usually running something like: This time of year is loaded. Be ready. The old feelings will come up again. The kids will pick up on it. You won’t be able to stop the cycle, you can only manage how visible it is.
That isn’t a thought you walk around with. It runs quietly, like background processing. And every excellent logistical preparation gets layered on top of it, while the actual material continues to surface on schedule.
The lunches are packed. The 95% keeps running the old tape. The September tension arrives anyway, on time, with feeling.
What Reaches the Stored Material Itself
Clients often come to Inner Influencing after this same pattern has been showing up for years — not always with kids in school, sometimes just with any new-beginning trigger that pulls old material to the surface. A new job in the fall. A new chapter starting. A move. Anniversaries of things that took longer to process than anyone realized. The logistics are handled. The talks are had. The tension still arrives, on cue, like a houseguest with their own key.
What Inner Influencing reaches is the stored material itself. It operates on completely different logic from logistics and prep work — which is why it’s now the foundation of the work I do with clients.
Inner Influencing is an established methodology for communicating directly with the subconscious mind. A direct instruction, structured in a specific way the subconscious can receive without resistance. The pattern doesn’t have to be analyzed or understood to be updated. It just needs the right signal.
That signal comes through a carefully worded statement using a trigger phrase - "Purple Cow" - that’s deliberately unusual. The oddness is functional: it cuts through habitual mental processing and tells the subconscious that what’s coming is a direct instruction, not another thought to file away. One statement. Said once. No repetition required.
Try It for Yourself
Read each statement below slowly - out loud if you can. Say it once, then stop. Let a moment of quiet follow before moving to the next.
Notice whatever comes, even something small. A small softening around the September feeling. A breath that lands. A sense, even faint, that the old material just got told it doesn’t have to surface this year the way it has before.
Statement 1 · The Surface Pattern
“Subconscious, when I say Purple Cow, you will get rid of the September tension that pulls up old, unprocessed material every fall, and keep me free from that from now on, and do this in a way that is natural, easy, instant and graceful.”
“Purple Cow.”
Say it once. Then pause and notice.
Statement 2 · The Hidden Layer
“Subconscious, when I say Purple Cow, you will get rid of any belief that fall is loaded, or that the old material has to surface every year on schedule, and keep me free from that from now on, and do this in a way that is natural, easy, instant and graceful.”
“Purple Cow.”
Say it once. Take a breath. Let it settle.
Statement 3 · Opening the Positive
“Subconscious, when I say Purple Cow, you will make it easy for me to walk into each new beginning as the person I am now, without the old material being triggered, and to show up from a settled place rather than a reactive one, and keep me free from that from now on, and do this in a way that is natural, easy, instant and graceful.”
“Purple Cow.”
Say it once. Then simply rest for a moment.
What Just Happened
Whatever you noticed, even something faint, even just a moment of the September feeling being less of an automatic ambush - that was your subconscious receiving an instruction at the level where the stored material is held.
It doesn’t usually arrive with drama. Sometimes it’s quiet. A breath. A sense that this fall might land slightly differently than the last several have.
What you just experienced is just the beginning of how Inner Influencing works. The deeper practice reaches the older layers - the early instructions from your own school years, the family-of-origin patterns that get triggered when you become the parent in the dynamic, the storage that’s been waiting all these years for the right kind of attention.
The free Inner Influencing Discovery Kit takes you further into the practice, explains the science behind why it works, and opens the door to that deeper clearing.
September isn’t the problem. The material September wakes up is the problem. The material can be updated. The Septembers can stop being the same Septembers.
That’s what you’ve just started.
